Mahler’s 3rd Symphony is a whole-evening work on a huge scale, with over 200 singers and musicians on the stage. The whole gamut of emotions, from love to fear, is to be found in Mahler’s overwhelming narrative of life and death.
NOTE Conductor Michael Tilson Thomas has unfortunately withdrawn from this concert for health reasons. He is replaced by conductor Pietari Inkinen, who has stepped in at short notice. If you have a ticket for this concert, you have been contacted by DR Koncerthuset by email.
‘A symphony must contain the whole world,’ Mahler said, and this applies to his 3rd symphony. Its subject matter is as comprehensive as it could possibly be: human existence on Earth. In this vast work, Mahler’s thoughts focus on an overwhelming paean of praise to life. The journey is long, and it is overwhelming. The symphony has six movements and lasts almost two hours. A great, emotional rollercoaster that ranges from naïve joy to anxiety and fear. But towards the conclusion, the singers join the orchestra, and proclaim, using words by the philosopher Nietzsche: ‘Woe implores: Go! But all joy wants is eternity”.
